EMA Membership

You may not know it, but when you join CFCA,
you become a member of EMA.

The Energy Marketers of America (EMA) is a federation of 48 state and regional trade associations representing approximately 8,000 independent petroleum marketers nationwide. This national association protects marketers at the federal level much like CFCA protects you at the state and local level. While California always leads the pack in legislative and regulatory creativity, recently the cross-over between federal requirements and state mandates has become much more complex. So, our need for, and participation in EMA has increased dramatically. Other states now recognize that what happens in California doesn’t stay in California. Therefore, CFCA has become a resource for the nation on legislative and regulatory trends – and how to fight them! Furthermore, EMA provides valuable access and assistance to CFCA in dealing with the federal government.

A key activity for EMA members (thus, our members) is the EMA Day on the Hill, held in Washington D.C. Like our CFCA Day at the Capitol, we organize meetings with Congressional delegates focusing on the representatives of our members making the trek back east. We typically have 8-10 members participate, although we have had as many as 15 attend. Several years ago, EMA's Day on the Hill coincided with the Senate vote on the debit card swipe fee amendment; almost 200 EMA members flooding their Senate representatives turned the tide and provided a stunning victory for national retail interests.
